Kinsmen Sports Centre is currently undergoing rehabilitation to replace or upgrade systems in the aquatic centre.
Rehabilitation work on Kinsmen Sports Centre aquatic centre continues. To ensure the facility remains open to the public, construction is being completed in a phased approach.
Phase 2 rehabilitation work, which addresses health and safety items in the deep tank, started in fall 2024 and is anticipated to complete in spring 2025.
Kinsmen Sports Centre has been operating since 1968 and was identified in the 2019-2022 Capital Budget as a priority for rehabilitation work to fix or replace and upgrade major mechanical and electrical systems, some of which are more than 50 years old.
In 2023, the rehabilitation project was downsized when funding was shifted to support other City of Edmonton building rehabilitation priorities.
Following this change, the work being completed involves the removal and replacement of the headwall at the Don Smith Memorial Pool, as well as aquatic centre health and safety compliance and legislative priority items. These upgrades will bring the Don Smith Memorial Pool and the aquatic centre’s deep tank up to current health and safety standards.
Design for the remaining rehabilitation work is complete and construction documents are on hold until funding becomes available. Funding for this project will be reassessed by City of Edmonton administration against other priorities within the 2027-2030 Capital Budget.
Design and construction are occurring at the same time and in phases. This phased approach allows Kinsmen Sports Centre to continue operating while its amenities are being rehabilitated.

2021-2022
Detailed design began.
2020
Preliminary design of the facility rehabilitation and parking lot renewal began.
The design of the rehabilitation work in the deep tank and Don Smith Memorial Pool was expedited.
2018-2019
Strategy and Concept Phases completed.
Studies conducted and scope identified for the project.
2025
Spring: Upgrades to the aquatic centre facilities are anticipated to be complete.
2024
Fall: Phase 2 - Upgrades to the aquatic centre facilities to meet health and safety standards are anticipated to begin.
Winter: Phase 1 - The removal and replacement of the headwall at the Don Smith Memorial Pool and the installation of a new stairway railing along the main diving platform were completed.
2023
Phase 1 rehabilitation work began.
2022
The repaving and renewal of the Kinsmen Sports Centre parking lot was completed.
2020
Fall: Construction for the expedited scopes was completed. The aquatic centre deep tank, Don Smith Memorial Pool and aquatic centre showers reopened.
Summer: Construction for the expedited scopes began. The aquatic centre deep tank, Don Smith Memorial Pool and aquatic centre showers closed for repairs.
