The City of Edmonton is demolishing the St. Bede School site and will create more open green space in Edmonton’s Gold Bar neighbourhood.

About the Project

In 2023, the City of Edmonton purchased the surplus school site from the Edmonton Catholic School Division. The City of Edmonton is demolishing the former St. Bede School site as the vacant site is no longer needed. As part of this project, the site is being turned into open space. This project will offer more opportunities for biodiversity, leisure and recreation in Gold Bar.

The demolition project involves hazardous materials abatement with safe disposal, the demolition of all man-made surfaces and structures, site grading and landscaping (seeding). The landscaping will expand the park’s lawn by planting grass where the school site used to be.

The City of Edmonton understands mature trees and natural areas are important to biodiversity. The demolition project will make every effort to preserve the site’s existing trees. Where needed, the demolition project will protect the trees along the boulevard.

The project began in fall 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in fall 2025. After the demolition project is completed, the site will be an open green space with trees.
