The Edmonton EXPO Centre Rehabilitation Project is updating the Edmonton EXPO Centre’s Halls A through D and installing Canada’s largest rooftop solar photovoltaic array.

Project Update - Fall 2024

The Edmonton EXPO Centre Rehabilitation Project continues on schedule. Phase 1 of the project is complete. Phase 2 work is ongoing.

About the Project

The Edmonton EXPO Centre (EXPO Centre) hosts trade shows, concerts, conventions and other events. The EXPO Centre’s original halls (A through D) were constructed in 1983 and have not been updated since they opened.

The Edmonton EXPO Centre Rehabilitation Project began with planning and design in spring 2021, and was followed by phased construction that started in fall 2021. This includes:

  • The installation of rooftop solar photovoltaics (solar PV) over Halls A through H
  • Hazardous materials abatement
  • Rehabilitation of the building envelope
  • Mechanical, electrical and structural upgrades to Halls A through D

Solar Photovoltaic Installation

The installation of the rooftop solar PV array is being completed in 2 phases.

Phase 1

Phase 1, during which solar PV panels were installed over Halls D through H, was completed in fall 2023.

The Phase 1 installation makes the EXPO Centre's solar PV array the largest rooftop solar system in Western Canada. The 5,745 solar panels installed generate approximately 2.8 gigawatt hours of energy, or about 33% of the facility’s yearly energy consumption. The array will save between $290,000 and $460,000 in energy costs per year.

Phase 2

The design of Phase 2 is complete and work on Halls A through C began in fall 2024.

Phase 2 includes the installation of 3,642 solar panels. These will generate approximately 1.9 gigawatt hours of energy and save $185,000 to $300,000 more in energy costs per year.

Once complete, the EXPO Centre’s solar PV array will generate around 4.7 gigawatt hours of energy per year.

Rehabilitation

The project’s rehabilitation work will also occur in 2 phases.

Phase 1

  • Upgrading the Hall D slab, bleachers, mechanical room and roof
  • Hazardous materials abatement
  • Structural reinforcement
  • Replacement of the mechanical system, boiler plant and electrical distribution systems in Halls A, B and C

Phase 2

  • Redevelopment of EXPO Centre Entrance 6
  • Rehabilitation of the EXPO Centre’s roofing, building envelope, skylight and sales ring

The Edmonton EXPO Centre Rehabilitation Project, which has a budget of $103.65 million, will bring the EXPO Centre up to current building codes, extending the facility’s life while improving the facility's energy efficiency and user experience.
