This project will rehabilitate City Arts Centre so users can continue learning, exploring and discovering their creativity.
Project Update - Summer 2025
The facility has reopened to programming following a temporary closure for necessary rehabilitation work.
Rehabilitation work began in spring 2025 and while the facility has reopened to programming, construction work continues across the site. Facility users are kindly asked to use caution, as work may be underway near programming areas.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we complete this important rehabilitation work, which is being completed in a phased approach to reduce its impact.
Demolition of some of the sidewalks, the landscape swale (a shallow ditch that captures, filters and slows the flow of rainwater) and areas in the north courtyard, as well as demolition work in Pottery Studio Two have been completed. The installation of the southeast exterior stairs has been completed. The facility elevator has been replaced.
Sidewalk repairs in the north courtyard, the construction of the landscaping swale, as well as the floor replacement and interior framing in Pottery Studio Two are anticipated to be completed in the fall.
The area of the City Arts Centre parking lot that has been in use by the project is anticipated to reopen in the fall.
About the Project
City Arts Centre opened in 1979 and is a City of Edmonton facility that offers arts programming to Edmontonians. Many of its systems have reached the end of their lifecycle and require rehabilitation or replacement.
The City Arts Centre Rehabilitation Project will rehabilitate parts of the building and site. The project involves hazardous materials abatement, life safety system upgrades and sidewalk repairs, as well as replacement of the building envelope, building systems and some interior finishes. This project will repair the building structure and replace its roof and part of the facility flooring and plumbing, in addition to its heating, electrical and ventilation systems.
These improvements will bring the building up to current building codes while improving accessibility, energy efficiency, safety and user experience throughout the building and site.
The rehabilitation project began in spring 2025 and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026. The project will take place in phases to reduce the impact for facility users.
The Garneau Park playground will remain open and access to City Arts Centre parking lot and exterior washrooms will be maintained during the majority of the rehabilitation project.
Following the rehabilitation, City Arts Centre will continue serving Edmontonians for years to come. Visit the City Arts Centre web page for more information about the diverse programs offered at the centre.
