About the Project
Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will be a shared facility that meets community recreational needs, while also creating opportunities for year-round triathlon, cycling training and events.
The project will create more community recreation space and will connect to Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, an architectural award-winning aquatic centre, through an above-ground link.
The integration of Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre into Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will make this facility the first indoor triathlon training centre in North America to support year-round training and events, furthering Edmonton’s commitment and connection to sports excellence.
Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre has received a Category A facility standard designation from the Union Cycliste Internationale, which is the world governing body of cycling. This designation qualifies a facility to host World Cups, Continental Championships, Junior World Championships and other national and international cycling events. The facility will have the only Category A indoor cycling track in Western Canada, and one of three in Canada.
The project has been advanced in partnership with the Alberta Velodrome Association and World Triathlon Series Edmonton. Along with providing a financial contribution, these partners have been engaged in facility design and will hold important roles in animating the centre for community and sport users.
Project Overview
In 2007, Edmonton City Council approved the Medium Term Recreation and Sports Field Plan, which identifies Coronation District Park as a site for the development of a community recreation centre close to Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre (now known as Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre).
This strategy was based on an extensive community needs assessment and public consultation. In 2011, planning began for the Coronation Community Recreation Centre project to be an addition to the Coronation District Park site.
Public input was collected in March 2014 after the schematic design phase of the project was completed. The project was put on hold late in 2014 to give facility partners time to fundraise their contribution towards the project.
In January 2019, the project resumed following funding approval by Edmonton City Council during deliberations for the 2019-2022 Capital Budget. The project design team validated the existing design with current standards, codes and requirements.
On November 12, 2020, Edmonton City Council directed that the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre Project proceed with the completion of design as "Build to Program," meaning the project will provide a large multipurpose community recreation centre and include the ability to host world-class events year-round with permanent and temporary seating for up to 940 spectators.
Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will include the following amenities:
- Fitness centre
- Walking/running track (333 metres on the outside lane)
- 250-metre Category A indoor cycling track
- Velodrome spectator seating for up to 940 people, including 264 permanent seats
- Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre, including 50-metre pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room and a newly added cold plunge pool
- Bouldering wall
- Infield courts
- A unique "urban court"
- Dedicated spin studio
- Multipurpose rooms and studios
- Indoor playground
- Child minding space
- Sport partner spaces (Alberta Velodrome Association and World Triathlon Series Edmonton)
- Canadian Sport Institute
- Second Cup Café (opening soon)
The design for this project was finalized in 2021. Construction began in spring 2022 and has been completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
