Project Update - Fall 2023

Construction of the steel structure was completed in spring 2023. The concrete wall assemblies and columns are also complete. Work on the roofing, underground utilities within the facility and rough-ins for mechanical and electrical systems is ongoing. Concrete form work inside the structure, which includes work on the cycling and running tracks, continues and the exterior envelope is being installed. The project is on schedule with an anticipated completion in 2026.

About the Project

The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will be a shared facility that meets community recreational needs, while also creating opportunities for year-round triathlon and cycling training and events.

The project will create more community recreation space and will connect to the Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre, an architectural award-winning aquatic centre, through an above-ground link.

The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will include an indoor cycling track, walking/running track, fitness centre, bouldering wall, gymnasiums, multi-purpose rooms and studios, an indoor play space and more.

Once complete, the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will be seeking a Category Two facility standard designation by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which is the world governing body of cycling. This designation qualifies a facility to host World Cups, Continental Championships, Junior World Championships and other national and international cycling events.

The project has been advanced in partnership with the Argyll Velodrome Association and World Triathlon Series Edmonton. Along with a financial contribution, these partners have been engaged in facility design and will hold important roles in animating the centre for community and sport patrons.

Project Overview

In 2007, Edmonton City Council approved the Medium Term Recreation and Sports Field Plan which identifies Coronation District Park as a site for the development of a community recreation centre close to Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre. This strategy was based on an extensive community needs assessment and public consultation.

In 2011, planning began for the Coronation Community Recreation Centre project to be an addition to the Coronation District Park site.

Public input was collected in March 2014 after schematic design. The project was put on hold late in 2014 to give facility partners time to fundraise their portion of the contribution toward the project.

In January 2019, the project was re-initiated following funding approval by City Council during budget deliberations for the 2019-2022 capital budget cycle. The project design team validated the existing design with the current standards, codes and requirements.

On November 12, 2020, Council directed that the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre proceed with the completion of design as “Build to Program", meaning that the centre will provide a large multi-purpose community recreation centre and include the ability to host world-class events year round with permanent and temporary seating for up to 676 spectators.

The project’s design was completed in 2021, and construction started in spring 2022. Construction is on schedule with anticipated completion in 2026.
