Project Update - July 2023
The facility remains closed as rehabilitation work continues. Work on the pool basin is nearing completion and rehabilitation of the locker rooms will continue throughout the fall and winter.
The facility will reopen in summer 2024. The reopening will occur after other outdoor pools are already open to accommodate the project timelines and facility fit-up.
Mill Creek Outdoor Pool, one of Edmonton’s most popular outdoor pools, opened in 1953 and was selected for rehabilitation in 2018. Planning and design of the project was finalized in spring 2022, and the budget of $7,000,000 was approved in June 2022.
Rehabilitation work started in 2022 and is expected to take two years with the anticipated re-opening of the pool in summer 2024.
Work on the pool basin is dependent on seasonal weather conditions and requires specialized trades. The construction period allows the work to be performed safely and ensures the quality of the project will provide long lasting performance so the pool can be enjoyed for years to come.
New Pool Standards for Alberta went into effect in November 2019 and included anti-entrapment, water chemistry and recirculation requirements. Mill Creek Pool required extensive work to comply with these new standards which resulted in the pool remaining closed. All necessary updates to meet the new standards are included in the project scope of the rehabilitation.
Understanding the inconvenience of having the Mill Creek Pool closed, residents are being redirected to the nearby Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool at 9170 Walterdale Hill. The facility offers zero depth entry to the pool, 1 and 3 metre diving boards, a slide and inclusive change rooms and washrooms.
