The Athlone Park/Calder Library, located at 12710 131 Avenue, was built in 2017. The catch basin and storm sewer line on site was removed during the construction of the Calder Library so as not to conflict with the underground utilities. However, there was no alternative site drainage system. As a result, an unofficial wetland area retained the storm water and did not allow the area to drain properly.
The project improved the site drainage to ensure proper water management. The Calder Library and Athlone Park are important assets for all Edmontonians and ensuring safe and lasting infrastructure is critical to building a healthy and thriving City. The project enables use of the outdoor library spaces, eliminates odours, reduces the mosquito manifestation and addresses safety concerns associated with the area.
Construction is complete and the project is under a one-year warranty and maintenance period. The fences remain in place around the worksite to allow the newly laid sod to grow. Access to the rest of the park is not impacted.
Construction is anticipated to start in June 2023 and be complete by September 2023. There will be a one-year warranty and maintenance period after project completion.
Access to the library is not expected to be impacted by this work. The area will be fenced off for crew and public safety.
The concept/preliminary design phase of this project is complete. Currently the detailed design process has not been funded. If funding is secured for construction, the area outside the library and into the park will be closed for safety reasons. Once construction is complete, the area will be reopened to the public.
Detailed design is currently in progress and currently not funded for construction. Once the funding is approved and construction begins, the area outside the library and into the park will be closed throughout construction for safety reasons and will be reopened when complete.
