This facility creates electricity from landfill gas, captured from the closed Clover Bar Landfill. It is owned by Capital Power.
When organic material breaks down inside a landfill, it creates a potent mixture of carbon dioxide and methane. A series of wells and pipes inside the Clover Bar Landfill collect this gas and deliver it to the plant.
The plant cleans the gas and uses it to power generators. This creates electricity that is supplied back to the power grid. When this is not possible, the plant flares off (burns) the gas. This produces far fewer greenhouse gasses than releasing landfill gas directly into the atmosphere.
