Up to 200 pieces of mail were stolen during a break-in at a City facility after hours on the weekend of June 28, 2025, which may have compromised the privacy of a limited number of Edmontonians.
The stolen mail would have been dropped off at a City facility, such as a recreation centre, attraction or the Edmonton Service Centre, or sent locally to the City via Canada Post between June 24 and 27, 2025. The stolen mail may have included details such as names, addresses, contact information, family details and/or financial information.
The City is reaching out to potentially affected individuals where possible.
How to Verify if You’re Impacted
The Leisure Access Program (LAP) and Ride Transit Program both require applicants to submit their application and supporting documents via mail, at a recreation centre, at a City attraction or at the Edmonton Service Centre.

Property taxes are due by June 30 each year to avoid late-payment penalties. Some property owners pay their taxes via mail. Property owners who submitted their property tax payment(s) via mail between June 24 and 27, 2025, may be impacted by the mail theft.
If you may be impacted, you should contact your bank to verify that your tax payment transaction(s) have been received and processed by the City of Edmonton or check your MyProperty account. If you have confirmed your payment was not applied, contact 311.
If your payment was not received, you are encouraged to notify the City by calling 311 and to contact your bank to cancel your cheque or money order and reissue payment.

Recommended Actions to Take
Anyone who believes their personal information may have been compromised should take proactive steps, including monitoring financial statements and credit reports for any unusual activity. Contact Canada's two main credit bureaus, Equifax Canada and TransUnion, for information on placing a fraud alert on your credit file.
City's Response to Mail Theft
Upon learning of the incident, the City of Edmonton notified the Edmonton Police Service immediately. It relocated its mail storage to another secure location and launched an internal privacy investigation to determine the extent of the privacy breach and provide the public with appropriate notification.
In addition, the City reported the privacy breach to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and the provincial Minister of Technology and Innovation.
