The Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) accepts waste from residents and non-residential customers.

Disposal Fees

Non-Residential Waste (Commercial)

Non-Residential waste includes waste dropped off by businesses, institutions and charities. Waste from junk removal, property management and landscaping companies is considered non-residential.

Construction and Demolition Waste	These materials are handled by GFL Environmental, a private business that manages the on-site Construction and Demolition (C&D) Recycling Facility. Please contact GFL Environmental directly for fees and accepted items.

Residential Waste

Residential waste includes waste dropped off by residents, from their own homes.

* For residential loads consisting only of mattresses, box springs, and/or appliances containing CFCs, only the per item surcharge applies.

How Fees are Calculated

Your disposal fee is determined by the weight of your load and the type of waste you are dropping off.

Your vehicle will be weighed as you enter the site, and again after you’ve dropped off your waste
An attendant will calculate your fee based on the difference

Please note:

A minimum charge is applied to all loads unless otherwise noted
If your load has multiple types of waste (for example, some yard waste and some mixed waste), the disposal fee for the most expensive material will be applied to your entire load
EWMC staff have the final say about accepted materials and charges

Materials Requiring Special Handling

Certain types of waste require pre-approval for disposal at EWMC. Some also require a Waste Identification Number (WID#) and a manifest. A disposal fee of $137 per tonne (minimum charge of $137) applies to these materials.

Materials that need a manifest and WID#

Cannabis waste (must follow provincial guidelines for destruction and disposal)
Tobacco waste (must follow provincial guidelines for destruction and disposal)

Materials that need a manifest

Drums, pails and industrial containers (empty)
Expired food, packaged and unpackaged (no liquids or frozen liquids)
Feed pellets and animal food waste

Materials that need pre-approval (disposal fees vary)

Oversized items, larger than 3 cubic metres (broken down into pieces less than 1 square metre)
Canisters (small tanks between 5 lbs and 10 lbs only, valves must be removed)
Fibreglass insulation (batts only, no loose powder)
Railway ties and treated wood, from residents only (maximum 10 ties, approval based on space)

Emergency or trauma scene clean-up
Expired medications (residents can return them to a pharmacy)
Explosives, munitions and fireworks (take to a police station, call 780-423-4567 first)
