Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility
The Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility (IPTF) sorts some household garbage, removing materials like worn-out clothing and plastics, which can be used to make refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The remaining garbage is loaded into long-haul trucks, which deliver it to a landfill 80 km southeast of Edmonton.
Garbage from apartments and condos that do not yet receive food scraps collection goes through an extra sort to remove organics. Food scraps are small and heavy, so they fall through sorting machinery that garbage passes through. The scraps are sent to the Anaerobic Digestion Facility, where they are turned into energy and compost. All apartments and condos will have food scraps collection by 2027.
