Excess Garbage Program

Even with diligent sorting, you may sometimes have more garbage than can fit in your cart. Keep it until your next collection day, or drop it off at an Eco Station or Big Bin Event.

Very large households (7+ people) and those that create home healthcare waste can apply for the Excess Garbage Cart Program.

Eco Station Drop-off

Residents can drop off 2 bags of garbage at an Eco Station for free. Garbage must be in clear bags (see-through). No recycling, food scraps or yard waste may be mixed in, or a fee will apply. Eco Stations also accept larger volumes of garbage (up to 10 bags) for a fee.

Note: Eco Stations always accept yard waste for free. It can be loose or in paper bags; plastic bags will need to be emptied onsite. For tips on managing yard waste between collection days, visit Yard Waste Collection and Options.

Excess Garbage Cart Program

Very large households, and those that create home healthcare waste, can apply for an excess (360 L) garbage cart.

To be eligible, your household must meet one of the following criteria:

Have 7 or more people in the same household, or

Generate non-hazardous home healthcare waste such as dressings, adult diapers and dialysis tubing and filters. Baby diapers are not considered home healthcare waste.

Properties participating in the Secondary Suite Cart Sharing program are not eligible for the excess (360 L) garbage cart program.

Tips for Reducing Excess Garbage

Use WasteWise to sort your waste. Properly sorting food scraps and recycling will create more space in your garbage cart. Download WasteWise from the Google Play or Apple App store, or use it online.

Donate unwanted items in good condition. Use the Reuse Directory to find local organizations that accept donations. Or offer items on Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji or your local Buy Nothing Group.

Drop-off large pieces of Styrofoam at an Eco Station, like foam packing blocks, sheets and coolers. Drop off is free and pieces will be recycled (Styrofoam cannot be recycled in blue bags).

Purchase items with less packaging. Stopping waste at the source is one of the best ways to reduce garbage.

Replace disposable items with reusable alternatives, when possible.
