Separate collection of yard waste in the spring and fall allows us to create clean, high-quality compost, while keeping more waste out of the landfill, in line with the 25-year Waste Strategy.
Yard waste collection dates always fall on Mondays. This allows the City to use existing staff and collection trucks, which are busy Tuesday to Friday with regular curbside collection.
Yard waste collection days are decided the year before and based on several factors:
Yard waste collection happens across the city over a two-month period. We know some collection dates may occur when there is less yard waste available for collection, or colder weather makes yard clean-up difficult. This changes from year to year due to weather conditions, and is difficult to predict. To accommodate for seasonal changes, two yard waste collection days are provided to everyone each season.
Yard waste material is processed separately from food scraps and used to make high-quality compost. This compost is available for free in the spring and summer at Ambleside and Kennedale Eco Stations, starting in May and ending in early fall.
