Hyundai Rotem Company will supply 46 new low-floor LRVs for the Valley Line West project. Design review work was completed in 2024. The first LRV was delivered to Edmonton in summer 2025. These LRVs will be compatible with, and incorporated into, the entire Valley Line fleet.

First Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Arrives
The first Valley Line West Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) arrived in Edmonton in summer 2025, marking a major milestone for the project. Shipped in two sections from Hyundai Rotem Company’s facility in Changwon, South Korea, the vehicle underwent extensive static, dynamic and climatic testing before being shipped overseas.
Following its arrival at the Port of Tacoma, Washington, the vehicle was transported by truck to the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in Edmonton. The first vehicle is one of 46 LRVs, with delivery continuing into 2027. Currently, there are 16 LRVs at various stages of manufacturing in South Korea.
The first Valley Line West Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) is scheduled to arrive in Edmonton by summer 2025, following months of rigorous testing in South Korea. This includes low-speed dynamic testing, systems validation and a final inspection.
Additional vehicles in the 46-LRV fleet are in various stages of assembly and testing.
As of mid-2024, Valley Line West LRV development remained in the final design phase, with significant progress toward manufacturing.
Throughout the year, Hyundai Rotem and the City of Edmonton finalized key design elements and began component testing. This included motor, braking and climate-system testing to ensure the LRVs can operate safely and comfortably in Edmonton’s extreme weather conditions, from -40C winters to 40C summers.
Manufacturing of full vehicle modules began later that year.
In early 2023, the City invited Edmontonians to test a full-scale mock-up of the new Valley Line West Light Rail Vehicle (LRV). The mock-up included about a quarter of the train, featuring the cab and a passenger area with an accessible wheelchair space. Built from wood and fibreglass, the model allowed people with a range of mobility needs to interact with the design, testing doors, seating layouts and accessibility features like wheelchair spaces and tactile push buttons.
Feedback helped improve the vehicle’s design to ensure it’s accessible, comfortable and inclusive for all Edmontonians.
Design work with Hyundai Rotem Company continued through 2023, with vehicle production scheduled to begin in 2024.
In November 2021, the City of Edmonton selected Hyundai Rotem Company as its preferred proponent to supply light-rail vehicles (LRVs) for the Valley Line West. Read our news release for more information on the award of the LRV contract.
The request for qualifications (RFQ) closed on February 4, 2021. On March 4, 2021, the City shortlisted 3 teams to participate in the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase of LRV procurement. Please read our industry bulletin for more details.
The project entered into Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) procurement on November 24, 2020 (see industry bulletin).
