The Wellington Bridge, located on 102 Avenue between 130 Street and 132 Street, is being replaced.
Project Update - September 2025
Replacement of the Wellington Bridge is anticipated to start the week of September 15, 2025. The bridge will be replaced as the current structure nears the end of its service life. Replacement of the bridge will ensure a safe crossing for those who walk, cycle and roll.
Wellington Bridge will be replaced with a clear-span girder structure, that incorporates some historical elements of the existing bridge. The new design improves accessibility and safety with dedicated cyclist and pedestrian spaces, including a shared pathway, safer traffic barriers, handrails and new street lighting.
During construction, Wellington Bridge, including the trail underneath the bridge, will be fully closed to all vehicle, transit, pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
Traffic Impacts
- 102 Avenue will be closed between 130 Street and 132 Street.
- Vehicles can detour using 142 Street/124 Street, Groat Road/107 Avenue and 124 Street (northbound)/Stony Plain Road (westbound).
- Pedestrians and cyclists will be required to detour northbound on 130 Street/132 Street to 104 Avenue.
- ETS users riding Route 2 can access pick-up/drop-off points on 124 Street and 142 Street. A temporary On-Demand Transit (ODT) zone will be established for residents in this area, allowing them to book an ODT trip from an existing Route 2 bus stop on 102 Avenue to either 124 Street or 142 Street (ETS Information Sheet).
- Local traffic will have access to 102 Avenue east from 142 Street to Tweedsmuir Crescent. To prevent shortcutting through the neighbourhood, there will be no road access at Connaught Drive, 129 Street, 130 Street, Churchill Crescent and 132 Street.
Construction has been scheduled to align with the Valley Line West LRT construction on Stony Plain Road to minimize disruption where possible.
The bridge is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026, with landscaping work to follow in 2027.
Replacement Bridge Design
The existing bridge will be replaced with a clear-span girder structure. Some historical elements of the existing Wellington Bridge will be incorporated into the new design at the roadway level.
To improve accessibility and safety, the new bridge will feature dedicated spaces for both cyclists and pedestrians. This includes a shared pathway on the north side and a sidewalk on the south side of the bridge.
This design was selected to enhance the bridge’s capacity, safety, and integration with surrounding infrastructure while meeting future needs while balancing budgetary constraints. The girder design reduces construction risks compared to the previously considered concrete arch design, which would have required a more complex foundation and extended construction schedule.
Additionally, the new bridge will feature decorative streetlights that complement the character of the Glenora neighborhood. These details will be refined as the design moves forward.
Environmental Considerations
Some trees in the project area will be removed to enable construction. A comprehensive vegetation restoration plan has been developed to restore the area post-construction. To protect the local bat population, bat boxes have been installed at two locations south of the bridge, offering alternative roosting sites for bats currently residing in the bridge structure.
