The High Level Bridge will be rehabilitated to ensure the bridge continues to operate. The renewal will also focus on improving safety, and enhancing accessibility and usability of the bridge.
About the Project
The High Level Bridge was constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railway between 1910 and 1913. The railway company transferred ownership of the structure to the City of Edmonton in 1994.
The bridge accommodates 2 southbound traffic lanes with 2 sidewalks/shared pathways on the lower deck. The upper deck accommodates the High Level Bridge Streetcar, which operates between Victoria Day and Labour Day.
There have been various repairs and structural modifications to the High Level Bridge over its 110+ years of service. Visual inspections completed in 2018 and further assessment in 2020 indicated the need for rehabilitation work.
Rehabilitation of the existing bridge will ensure a safe, reliable and functional river crossing that balances the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, residents and businesses for the next 75 years.
