81 Avenue, from Gateway Boulevard to 104 Street will be reconstructed. Construction is underway.
Reconstruction and streetscaping on 81 Avenue, from Gateway Boulevard to 104 Street, is underway and is anticipated to be completed in spring 2026.
This project will create a vibrant pedestrian-first corridor and improve road safety for all users. Streetscaping will include features such as paving stones, street furniture, trees and decorative lighting.
Directional closures on 81 Avenue will be in place during construction. Pedestrian, local and business access will be maintained at all times.
81 Avenue between 104 Street and Gateway Boulevard, falls under the Neighbourhood Renewal Program (NRP) which addresses deteriorating collector road conditions and provides preventative renewal measures to ensure and maintain the safety of road users.
As part of the reconstruction, opportunities to improve the public realm, improve connectivity for active modes, and enhance safety for all roadway users will be considered.

Construction Bulletin - April 2025
The concept plan for the 81 Avenue Reconstruction project has been finalized. Its development was guided by technical requirements, stakeholder feedback and City plans and policies.
Two rounds of engagement were held with property owners, businesses and the Old Strathcona Business Association. The City integrated stakeholder feedback into the concept plan where possible. The plan includes improvements to the public realm and pedestrian experience through sidewalk widening, streetlight replacement and the addition of street furniture and landscaping.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2025; the City will work closely with property owners and businesses to mitigate impacts during construction.
