Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal construction is coming to Meyokumin in spring 2024!

Construction Update - March 2024

It’s the first year of Meyokumin Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal and we are scheduled to start in May 2024! Work will consist of reconstruction and paving of the roads, alleys and removal and replacement of public sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street lighting.

This year, the majority of construction will take place in the alleys only. Please view this scope map to see the 2024 construction area. Work will also happen in the parks and open spaces in the neighbourhood.

Preparing for Construction

Local Improvement Options

A Local Improvement is a construction project undertaken near or adjacent to residents’ properties which is considered more beneficial to the property owner and local area than to the City as a whole. These include upgrades to street lights and sidewalks.

Residents in Meyokumin chose not to pursue decorative street lights, but had the opportunity to participate in the sidewalk Local Improvement decision.

Property owners were mailed a local improvement package dated January 23, 2024 which included information about the sidewalk reconstruction Local Improvement and a form for those who wished to petition against. The 30-day petition period has since expired. Since the City did not receive majority (50% +1) petitions against the Local Improvement, sidewalk reconstruction will take place in all project areas over 3 years of construction for the neighbourhood.

Local Improvements

About the Project

Neighbourhood Renewal rehabilitates residential roads, replaces street lights, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and adds missing sidewalk links, where possible. Other opportunities to improve how people walk, bike, roll, drive and gather in the neighbourhood, and how they enjoy City-owned parks and open spaces are also explored.

Alley Renewal will be included as part of the neighbourhood reconstruction. Alley Renewal involves alley reconstruction and repaving, improvements to surface drainage where possible, and upgrading of existing alley lighting to LED fixtures. Utility assessments and repairs, along with removals and pruning of trees and shrubs, are also completed.

A series of public events will be scheduled by the project team which will give residents the opportunity to build a project vision and guiding principles together and provide regular feedback on the different stages of the project including design.

Arterial roads are not included in the scope of work.

The Building Great Neighbourhoods project team are genuinely interested guests, stepping into your neighbourhood like a visitor in your home. We want to learn and appreciate how you live and what you value in your community. Through public engagement, we will gain an understanding about what you need and value in your neighbourhood.

We seek to involve you in decision-making to shape the vision for engagement and neighbourhood improvements. Working together, we can make the most out of your neighbourhood.

How to Get Involved

We have created a road map to help you and your neighbours understand the steps of the renewal process and how you can participate. At each step we will tell you what the purpose is and how your input will inform the decisions being made. We commit to report back on how we used your input.

Concept Phase

The Concept phase is when we need to hear from you the most! We need your help to co-create a vision and guiding principles, explore opportunities, and explore options and tradeoffs. These are the most important pieces for your Neighbourhood Renewal and will be used to create a draft design to best meet your neighbourhood needs.

Design Phase

During the Design phase, we want your input on the refined designs for your neighbourhood. Your feedback will be incorporated into the final design, alongside technical requirements and City policies. These designs were created from the vision and guiding principles we co-created together. You shared your input, we incorporated your feedback, now we build!

Build Phase

During the Build phase, we want to hear your concerns about how construction may affect your private property.

Project History

Preparing for Construction - January 2024

Planning and design has been underway for Meyokumin Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal since March 2022. The Project Team has worked to create a design that meets current City standards, policies and technical considerations and considers public input.

We presented the final design to the community in October 2023 and now the time has come to start Preparing for Construction!

We invite you to learn and ask questions about construction and share your feedback and perspectives to identify potential impacts you may experience during construction.

A What We Heard Report summarizing your feedback will be available in the coming months.

The updated final design will include any adjustments that were made following the Community Feedback on Final Design stage. We will be reaching out to you again in spring 2024 as we enter the Preparing for Construction stage of Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal.

What We Heard Report - September 2022

The What We Heard Report brings together your feedback on our proposed design for Meyokumin, including when and how the City used policy and program information, public engagement input and technical requirements to make project decisions.

This report highlights the comments received during the Building a Project Vision Together and Exploring Opportunities stages between January and April 2022.

This report will set the stage for the Exploring Options and Tradeoffs period of engagement, on the way to seeing the first proposed design for Meyokumin!
