Construction Update - November 2025

Neighbourhood Renewal construction in Gariepy has wrapped up for the 2025 construction season!

Construction began in May 2025 and was finished the fourth week of October. The 2025 construction season was a success, and we completed the majority of the planned construction, including the reconstruction of roads, sidewalks, curbs and gutters in the following areas:

57 Avenue, 59 Avenue, 60 Avenue, 61 Avenue, 172 Street, 173 Street, 174 Street, 175 Street, 176 Street, 177 Street and Gariepy Crescent.

There was some work in the 2025 construction area that was not completed. The installation of new streetlights is being coordinated with EPCOR and is scheduled for completion by spring of 2026. Work remains ongoing at the two pedestrian bridges over Gariepy Ravine. The bridges are currently being installed and will be open for public use in late November 2025. Due to seasonal constraints, the remaining path and landscaping work around the bridges is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2026.

Road and sidewalk reconstruction landscaping follows construction as areas are completed and is highly dependent on weather and sod availability. Front yard landscaping is progressing with topsoil placement expected to be completed this season. Some sod may not be installed this season due to availability and will be completed in early 2026 once available. The shared use paths and breezeways constructed in 2025 will have final landscaping completed in 2026.

About the Project

Neighbourhood Renewal rehabilitates residential roads, replaces street lights, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and adds missing sidewalk links, where possible. Other opportunities to improve how people walk, bike, roll, drive and gather in the neighbourhood, and how they enjoy City-owned parks and open spaces are also explored.

Alley Renewal is part of the Gariepy neighbourhood reconstruction. Alley Renewal involves alley reconstruction and repaving, improvements to surface drainage where possible and upgrading of existing alley lighting to LED fixtures. Utility assessments and repairs, along with removals and pruning of trees and shrubs, are also completed.

A series of public events were carried out by the Project Team which gave community members the opportunity to build a project Vision and Guiding Principles together and provide regular feedback on the different stages of the project, including design.

Arterial roads are not included in the scope of work.

Project History

2025 Construction Updates

October 2025

Construction of new sidewalks is on schedule. Road reconstruction has begun on 57 Avenue and 172 Street, which will result in localized road closures. The replacement of street lights and poles is now tentatively scheduled for November, dependent on EPCOR crew availability.

September 2025

Work on the new sidewalks is progressing on schedule. Work has begun on the reconstruction of 57 Avenue and 172 Street roadways and will have localized road closures. The replacement of the street lights and poles is scheduled to start in September, depending on coordination with EPCOR.

August 2025

A full road closure of 57 Avenue from 175 Street to Lessard Drive is now in place. This closure will be in effect until August 29, 2025. Refer to the sketch for the affected areas and follow posted detours.

All of the drainage replacements and relocations have been completed. Work on the new sidewalks are progressing on schedule. The paving of Gariepy Crescent is underway and will be completed shortly. The road reconstruction of 57 Avenue in front of Centennial School is currently underway and is proceeding on schedule. The replacement of the street lights and poles is scheduled to start at the end of August, depending on coordination with EPCOR.

The work in Gariepy Park and Top of Bank Park (along 53 Avenue and Lessard Drive) has also started. This work is being delivered by a separate contractor and will be monitored by Open Space Infrastructure Delivery.

July 2025

The majority of the drainage replacements and relocations have been completed. Work on the new sidewalks is progressing on schedule. The replacement of the roadways is scheduled to start on select streets starting the end of July. The replacement of the street lights and pole is scheduled to start at the end of July.

June 2025

Work in Gariepy Park and Top of Bank Park (along 53 Avenue and Lessard Drive) has also started. This work is being delivered by a separate contractor and will be monitored by Open Space Infrastructure Delivery.

Local Improvement Decision

A Local Improvement is a construction project undertaken near or adjacent to residents’ properties which is considered more beneficial to the property owner and local area than to the City as a whole. These include upgrades to street lights and sidewalks.

Residents in Gariepy chose not to pursue decorative street lights, but had the opportunity to participate in the sidewalk Local Improvement decision.

Property owners were mailed a local improvement package dated January 31, 2024 which included information about the sidewalk reconstruction Local Improvement and a form for those who wished to petition against. The 30-day petition period has since expired. Since the City did not receive majority (50% +1) petitions against the Local Improvement, sidewalk reconstruction will take place in all project areas over 2 years of construction for the neighbourhood.

Construction Update - November 2024

Neighbourhood Renewal construction in the Gariepy neighbourhood has wrapped up for the 2024 construction season!

Construction began in May of 2024 and was finished the third week of October. The 2024 construction season was a success and we completed most of the planned construction including the reconstruction of roads, sidewalks, curbs and gutters in the following areas:

South of 57 Avenue, on Lessard Drive, 53 Avenue, 55 Avenue, 56 Avenue, 174 Street, 175 Street and 176 Street.

There are some areas in the 2024 construction area that were not completed. Those include the installation of new street lights and the construction of the new path in the Top of Bank Park. The outstanding work will be completed when construction resumes in 2025.

The landscaping following the road and sidewalk reconstruction is being delivered by a separate contractor and will be monitored by the Project Team. Landscaping work is highly dependent on weather and sod availability. Sod is expected to be completed this year, with the exception of the Top of Bank Park, which will be completed once the shared path is constructed in 2025.

Neighbourhood Renewal work will resume in Gariepy in the first week of May 2025, weather permitting. The planned scope for 2025 will include the reconstruction of roads, sidewalks, curbs and gutters in the following areas:

57 Avenue, 59 Avenue, 60 Avenue, 61 Avenue, 172 Street, 173 Street, 174 Street, 175 Street, 176 Street, 177 Street, and Gariepy Crescent. Please view this scope map to see the 2025 construction area.
The construction of pathways in Gariepy Park and Top of Bank Park have been moved to the 2025 scope and work will resume in the spring of 2025.

Prior to work resuming, construction notifications will be delivered to impacted residences.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we completed another successful year of Neighbourhood Renewal construction. Construction in Gariepy began in 2024 and is expected to take 2 years.

Construction Update - October 2024

Gariepy Neighbourhood Renewal consists of reconstruction and paving of the roads and removal and replacement of public sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street lighting.

Construction began in May 2024 in the 2024 area and is progressing on schedule. The sidewalk construction is mainly complete, with some driveway connections still remaining.

The base lift of asphalt has been completed on all sections of the roads. The final lift of asphalt will be completed the first week of October, depending on weather. The construction of the remaining 3 continuous crossings will be coordinated with the remaining asphalt paving. All construction activities are on schedule to be completed by the middle of October.

The landscaping behind the renewal work is being handled by a separate contractor. Work is scheduled to start shortly, with topsoil being placed in all excavated areas.

Sod will be placed depending on weather and timelines. Not all areas may receive sod before the end of the season. Areas that don’t receive sod in 2024 will be completed when 2025 construction begins.

Community Feedback on Final Design - October 2023

Thank you to everyone who engaged with the Project Team during the Community Feedback on Final Design stage of Gariepy Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal. The online survey closed on October 8, but you can still review the final design.

The public engagement activities and participation are summarized in the Engagement Summary.

The What We Heard report for the Community Feedback on Draft Design stage is also ready. We are committed to using the feedback from the previous stage to shape the final design for Gariepy.

Your feedback will be considered as we finalize the design for Gariepy Neighbourhood and Alley Renewal. We will be reaching out to you again in spring 2024 as we enter the Preparing for Construction stage of Neighbourhood Renewal.
