Action Description
This action examines different methods for prioritizing competing uses for curbside space, such as parking, patios, parklets, electric vehicle charging stations and more. This action will develop guidelines to guide the City in determining where, when and how public curbside parking should be prioritized in relation to these competing uses based on district plan direction and The City Plan goals. This will help put all modes of transportation on more equal footing and provide a wider range of uses of our public curbside space to support resident, business and overall community outcomes.
Current Status
The City has finished consulting with other North American cities to better understand best practices and how to apply them to the Edmonton context. We have also analyzed existing data on curbside activity in Edmonton to gain a better understanding of its current use and attempt to inform priorities using a data-driven approach.
A draft framework has been developed that uses policy direction from district plans to outline a hierarchy of curbside uses (for example, parking, transit, loading zones, patio space, active transportation, and other uses) and their prioritization in different geographical areas and contexts (for example, residential areas, industrial areas, and other areas).
The goal is to provide guidance on how to make best use of the curbside space. Processes related to planning, design and operational changes to curbside use, such as public feedback, will not be affected by this framework.
Next Steps
The next steps are to finalize the framework and release it in 2025.
