New Trains. New Behaviours.
Valley Line Southeast LRT is new, and different from existing LRT in Edmonton, but existing rules of the road still apply whether you are walking, biking, rolling, driving or riding transit.
Drivers
- There are changes at intersections.
- Drivers are not allowed to turn right on red lights at some intersections.
- Remember to shoulder check when turning - trains may come from either direction.
- Always follow traffic signs and signals.
- Always yield to pedestrians.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you see tracks, expect a train.
- There are no crossing arms, gates or bells at intersections.
- Do not stop on the tracks or race a train across the tracks.
Cyclists and People Who Roll
- Use designated bike lanes and shared-use paths.
- Do not cycle or roll along the tracks.
- Only cross at designated crossings.
- Use caution when rolling over the tracks.
- Always look both ways before crossing the tracks.
- There are no crossing arms, gates or bells at intersections.
- Do not stop on the tracks or race a train across the tracks.
- Watch for signs and signals indicating what turn movements are allowed at intersections.
Pedestrians
- Trains move quickly and quietly—be aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Only cross at designated pedestrian crossings. Do not jaywalk.
- Push the pedestrian walk button to get a walk signal.
- Always follow pedestrian signs and signals to cross the road and tracks safely.
- There are two-stage crossings at some intersections - this means you will cross the road and the tracks in two phases, with two pedestrian lights that you need to push.
- Watch for turning vehicles and look both ways before crossing.
Transit Riders
- Transit riders can easily access Valley Line stop platforms via ramps.
- Watch for trains when entering or exiting the platform - there may be another train coming from the opposite direction.
- Do not shortcut across the tracks to get to the opposite platform. - there may be a train coming from the opposite direction.
- Wait behind the bumpy yellow strip on the platform to keep a safe distance from moving trains.
- Emergency help buttons are on all stop platforms and will connect the caller to ETS Security.
Seniors and Persons with Disabilities
- All crosswalks have pedestrian lights and signals- these signals have an audible chirp sound and a countdown timer that allows time for people of all ages and abilities to cross safely.
- Tracks are embedded at designated crossings and should not interfere with your wheelchair or mobility aid.
- Transit riders can easily access Valley Line stop platforms via ramps.
- Low-floor trains offer sidewalk-level boarding on and off the train at all stops and stations. There is no step up or down.
- Trains have designated priority seating near the doors for seniors, persons with disabilities, persons with mobility aids, pregnant individuals and those travelling with children.
- Valley Line Southeast is an accessible system providing space for wheelchairs and mobility aids at stop platforms and on trains.
