Crews in this program work on maintaining small collector roads, residential streets and alleys. They perform base repairs, crack sealing and patch paving as part of pavement repairs.
Paving Operations performs the following types of work:
These projects consist of small collector roads, residential roads or alleys spread across the city that require maintenance paving. The intention of these projects are to extend the useful life of the road surface.
A grinder removes the top oxidized asphalt surface or top surface distresses. This allows a new asphalt surface to be installed.
The new asphalt is transported by tandem trucks to the job site and is installed using the paver. Asphalt is compacted by using large steel drum and rubber tire rollers.
These initiatives involve both remedial and proactive maintenance strategies, encompassing tasks such as repairing bases, sealing cracks and patching pavement. The overarching objective of these interventions is to minimize recurring maintenance needs, uphold asset functionality and extend the pavement's lifespan.
If the material below the asphalt is compromised and causing road deterioration, base repairs must be completed prior to asphalt placement. The failed area is excavated, strengthened by geogrid reinforcement, backfilled with suitable material and then capped with a new lift of asphalt.
Cold Mix Asphalt Repair
Pre-mixed asphalt is poured into a pothole or wide crack and packed as tightly as possible.
Hot Mix Asphalt Repair
Pavement around a pothole is excavated, then filled, compacted and sealed with hot asphalt.
Crack sealing serves as a proactive maintenance method to prevent moisture infiltration into the pavement elongating the asset's lifespan. This involves cutting the cracks to specified dimensions, thoroughly cleaning them and filling them with a specialized sealing material.
Patch paving is conducted in cases of widespread surface deterioration, where multiple patches in close proximity are needed, necessitating frequent maintenance. This procedure typically addresses areas with a minimum size of 3.5m x 30m. Roads undergo patch paving only if they are not slated for renewal within the next 5 years.
Step 1: Grinding Phase
This stage typically lasts 3-5 days as crews utilize heavy equipment to remove the surface levels of defective asphalt. 'No Parking' signs and Road Closures will be in place. Following completion of this step, a break of 1-2 weeks will occur. During this break, normal driving and parking conditions resume.
Step 2: Paving Phase
This process usually spans 3-5 days as crews replace the defective asphalt with new material using heavy equipment. 'No Parking' signs and Road Closures will be enforced. After paving is finished, normal driving and parking activities resume until the subsequent phase.
Step 3: Leveling Stage
Approximately 1-2 weeks after paving, crews return to adjust existing utilities such as manholes and valve vaults to ensure the new surface is level. Parking will only be affected around each utility item for a day or two.
