Renewal of the connector piece of the existing trail between Avalon Junior High School and Lendrum Park to promote community connectivity and create a connection.

Project update - October 2022

Construction was completed and the trail reopened in August 2022.

During summer construction, the City removed eight Northwest Poplar trees close to the trail and replaced them with eight Japanese Lilac trees. Those were selected as part of the overall project and are a medium-sized tree that can provide great shade as they mature and also would not outgrow the space.

The trees between the trail and the school building were not affected.

Project Overview

The project renewed the connector piece of the existing trail in an effort to promote community connectivity and create a connection between Avalon Junior High School and Lendrum Park. The project scope of work included replacing the existing asphalt trail, building a short walkway connection between Avalon Junior High School and Lendrum Park and the removal and replacement of trees and landscaping.

As part of the trail renewal project, tree removals are necessary to meet setback requirements with the renewed trails and to replace them with suitable tree species to prevent damage to the infrastructure in the future. Considerations were made for the nesting season in the tree removal process.

The trail was developed in the 1960s and this project will rehabilitate a currently closed section of trail. The trail was renewed to correct a damaged portion of the asphalt trail caused by tree roots.

The trail is currently closed and will remain closed until construction is complete. Construction was completed in August 2022, ahead of schedule, and the trail has been reopened.
