While the majority of the 10,000 plus public space waste containers collect only garbage, the City of Edmonton has begun implementing a three-stream waste sorting program (recycling, food scraps and garbage) in select outdoor attractions. These mirror how residents with curbside collection sort their waste at home.

Leaving litter and waste on private or public property makes the city look dirty and unhealthy. It also has harmful effects on the environment and takes immense resources each year to clean up. Help keep Edmonton’s streets, sidewalks, and parks clean! Please dispose of your waste in public space waste containers and sorting stations. Waste that is properly sorted, at home or in public spaces, helps to contribute to Edmonton’s goal to divert 90% of waste from landfill.
Did you know there is a network of over 10,000 public space waste containers placed across the city? This network of containers, along with the residential cart collection program and the communal bin collection program that serves multifamily residents, make up Edmonton’s integrated waste collection system. This system is meant to serve Edmontonians where they live and play. Public space waste containers are meant to reduce litter by providing waste collection services to Edmontonians when they are out and about.

To view the containers, in the Legend under “Waste Management Services” check “Garbage Cans - Parks”, “Garbage Cans - Transit” and “Garbage Cans - Waste Management”.
