What is Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day?
On August 23, 1876, the Plains Cree, Woods Cree, Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux, and Dene people met with Crown representatives at Fort Carlton to enter into Treaty No. 6. The traditional name of Edmonton is amiskwaciwâskahikan, meaning Beaver Hills House, and is located on Treaty No. 6 territory.
Our city has a vibrant Indigenous history. We look to the First Nations to guide and inform our work towards human equity, climate resiliency and economic growth moving forward. Acknowledging the achievements and contributions of local First Nations people in the development of our region is an important step in reconciliation.
