The City offers a variety of outdoor adventure programs for youth, families and groups. Learn more about our daycamps, drop-in outdoor programs and the available activities in our parks.

Outdoor Adventure Experiences runs programs dedicated to providing fun and memorable outdoor activities right here in Edmonton.

We offer a variety of programs, including: free drop-in, group and registered classes. These programs give children, youth, adults, and families the chance to discover and enjoy outdoor recreation.

All equipment is provided.

Free Drop-in Programs

Join us to play outside this fall, winter and spring. Outdoor Adventure Experiences is offering free, drop-in family-oriented programs called Play Rangers. Play Rangers themes change monthly.

Play Rangers

Play Rangers focuses on children and family participation, with planned special outdoor recreation activities that can be enjoyed by all. Play Rangers will take place at Whitemud Park (13909 Fox Drive NW) weekly on Saturdays and Northeast River Valley Park (903 153 Avenue NE) every third Saturday of the month.

Come dressed for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes and don’t forget water and snacks. Children under 6 need to be accompanied by an adult. Children 6-12 years old are welcome to attend on their own.

Parents and caregivers are responsible for their children at all times and must be available in the event of an emergency. 

Themes change monthly and can include:

  • Building your own survival shelter out of tarps and ropes
  • Playing disc golf
  • Trying slacklining
  • Learning about map reading and look for some orienteering controls in the park
  • Trying to start a fire with a flint and steel
  • Learning how to use a GPS, try and find a geocache
  • Basic navigation skills including map reading and compass work
  • Building a fire without paper and learning how to build simple tarp shelters
  • Making popcorn over an open fire
  • Kicksleding
  • Snowshoeing
  • Snowfort making

Outdoor Adventure Day Camps

Get ready for an unforgettable summer with our Outdoor Adventure Day Camps! Campers will spend their days exploring Edmonton’s beautiful River Valley, learning new skills, and making memories that last a lifetime.

Our action-packed programs are designed for kids ages 4 and up. Led by fully qualified outdoor adventure leaders, campers will try activities like hiking, biking, swimming and hands-on adventure challenges—everything they need is provided!

Program Leaders

All leaders are dedicated to providing an enjoyable program experience for your group, with an emphasis on safety and risk management.

All Program Leaders are:

  • Cleared through a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • CPR C First Aid trained and carry a first aid kit
  • Hold industry standard (or better) certifications and training for their led activities

Cancellation Policy

Withdrawal and Transfer Requests

Contact 311 for any withdrawal or transfer requests.

  • Withdrawals 15+ days before the course starts: Full course fee credited to your MoveLearnPlay account.
  • Withdrawals 4–14 days before the course starts: $10 administration fee applied; remaining fee will be credited to your MoveLearnPlay account.
  • Withdrawals within 72 hours of the course start: Non-refundable.

Program Cancellations by Outdoor Adventure Experiences

Programs may be cancelled, combined, or rescheduled. We strive to notify participants at least 3 business days before the start date in the case of a change. If a program is cancelled due to weather advisories or temperature limitations, our program coordinator will collaborate to transfer participants to a like program at no additional cost. If a program is cancelled and no similar program is available, or a new date does not work for participants, then the full fee will be credited back to their MoveLearnPlay account. Once credited to their account, participants can request funds back to the original method of payment for the program.

Outdoor Adventure Activities to do in the Parks

Individual registered and group programs are available at various times of the year. Day camps and free drop-in programming are offered at select sites.
