Hiring Process

Our simplified hiring process makes it easier to apply, interview and get hired.

Note: Some jobs may require you to provide a police check and/or a driver's abstract, which may incur a cost to you.

Step 1: Application Phase
  • Easy application process: Simply submit your resume online through our job postings - it's that easy
  • Keep your resume updated: Ensure your resume is current each season to showcase your latest skills and experience
  • Tailor your resume: Highlight the skills and experiences that match the specific seasonal job you're applying for
  • Show us what you've got: Add specific examples of the work you've done to your resume. For example, if you're applying for a labourer position, include examples of your experience such as using hand tools, shovelling snow, or digging ditches
  • Explore your options: With a wide range of seasonal positions available, you're sure to find something you'll love. Apply to as many as you like – just keep your resume current!
Step 2: Interview Phase
  • Fast and efficient: Our streamlined interview process for seasonal jobs typically includes 3 - 5 interview questions, and 4 mandatory questions (with a yes or no response). We've shortened the interview so you can be hired quickly.
  • In person or virtual: Our interviews may be hosted in person at a city worksite or virtually via Google Meet. You'll be informed of the interview details ahead of time.
  • Meet the team: Expect to meet one or two hiring managers who are eager to learn about your skills and experience at the interview.
  • Get ready to impress: Be prepared to answer questions about your qualifications and why you're interested in the position. This is your time to shine!
  • Look out for special hiring events: Some areas host hiring events that may offer on-the-spot interviews and potential job offers! Events will be promoted at the top of our seasonal jobs web page.
Step 3: Selection Phase
  • Hear back: The hiring manager will contact you by phone or email to let you know the results of the interview and whether you were successful or not in the competition. If you are successful in the competition, you may be asked to complete a few more steps before moving to the verbal offer or offer letter step.
  • Police check (if needed): You will receive instructions on how to complete this step. Note: There may be a cost associated with this.
  • Driving requirements (if needed): You will need to provide your driver's license and a driver's abstract.  We will send you the information you need to obtain the abstract. Note: Candidates are required to be 18 years of age or older for driving positions.
  • Verbal offer details: If you are successful, the hiring manager will discuss the job details, including location, start date, training, and if there is any required safety gear.
  • Offer letter: Once you verbally accept the offer, you'll receive an email with a formal offer letter to review and accept online.
  • Welcome to the City! Accepting the offer letter officially starts your onboarding as a City of Edmonton employee.

  • What it means: You've done such a great job that you're guaranteed a fast-tracked hiring process for future seasonal work if that same position is offered. Your Recall Status only applies to the same position you worked in the previous season.
  • The Perks - once Recall Status is obtained:
    • No need to reapply for the same seasonal position
    • Skip the interview process – you're pre-approved!
    • Get contacted early to confirm your interest in a position before job postings go live
    • Have priority in getting hired for the next season
  • How it works: If you earn Recall Status, you'll be contacted early by our hiring team about your availability for the upcoming season.
  • Note: Not all positions are eligible for Recall Status. Achieving Recall Status does not guarantee you a job.

Why Our Seasonal Workers Love Their Jobs

Our seasonal employees share their experiences and tell you why they keep coming back!

I joined the City because I enjoy working with children. The supervisor made me feel welcome, as did my new co-workers, which appealed to me. I've stayed because the work environment is positive and supportive. It's given me the opportunity and flexibility to grow in my knowledge of childcare, and I really enjoy my work.

— Aura Gariepy, Childcare Attendant Supervisor

The best way I can describe the culture is like being part of a large sports team. Within a team, everyone has a role that he or she must fulfill to ensure the objectives of the team, or in this case, the organization, are met successfully. My experience as a part of this team has been an enjoyable one, and I look forward to going to work each day.

— Jason Becher, Labourer / Truck Driver
