The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Police Service work together with Edmonton’s school boards to encourage safe behaviours around schools using enforcement, road design and engineering, community activation and engagement and more.

School Safety Program

From 2015 to 2022, the City assessed the roads near all elementary schools in Edmonton and implemented safety upgrades that were identified through the School Safety Program.

In 2021, 49 schools were upgraded to help increase safety and livability with zebra crossings, stop signs, pavement markings, retro-reflective sleeves, and flashing beacons*

Safe Routes to School Program

The Safe Routes to School program aims to improve safety along the routes to schools beyond the immediately surrounding roads.

In 2023, routes to 5 schools were assessed and upgraded to improve students’ and their families’ safety as they walk, bike and roll to school. These upgrades also improved community safety around playgrounds and park space used by any nearby residents.

This year, 2024, an additional 6 schools have been identified for improvements as part of this program.

Brander Gardens Engagement

The City of Edmonton wants to hear feedback about the traffic safety upgrades in Brander Gardens that were installed in summer 2023. Provide your experience travelling to and from school with the new measures and one-way streets! Survey closes on April 29.

Project Funding

These projects are funded through the Traffic Safety Automated Enforcement Reserve, which uses automated enforcement funds to invest in safe and livable streets.
