The Animal Care & Control Centre is where Edmonton’s stray and lost pets are housed. The facility offers safe-harbour for sick, injured, and lost pets as well as victims of animal neglect, cruelty and abandonment.

We house and care for these pets until such time as their rightful owners can be found or they are transferred to a rescue for adoption.

2025 Paws for a Cause Pet Food Drive

Everyone deserves a holiday meal, including our pets! The Animal Care & Control team is hosting a pet food drive for Edmontonians to support Edmonton’s Food Bank.

Our Animal Care & Control team will be on-site accepting donations at these locations from 11am-3pm:

Santa will also be making a special stop in to snap some photos with you and your pet. Get creative with our Animal Control Officers and create some fun memories.

If you can’t make it in person, you can bring or purchase pet food or supplies and drop them in the donation boxes at several participating locations between November 19 - December 15.

Staff Care and Services

Staff at the facility is trained to look after the health and well-being of all pets in our care by providing:

First aid and veterinary care for animals that come in with an injury
Quality food
Kennels that are cleaned and disinfected throughout each day
Vaccinations to protect from infection
Specialty care for unique pets

The Animal Care & Control Centre:

Houses more than 6,000 lost pets found in Edmonton each year
Has a 2,120 square metre (22,800 square feet) building that holds up to 84 cats and 47 dogs comfortably according to capacity for care
Has a specially designed area for small pets
Is a one-stop-shop for pet licensing, stray animal care and enforcement services
Has officers who are based at the Centre
Is next-door neighbours with the Edmonton Humane Society

Appointment Bookings Information

To enable us to serve you and your pets in a quick and efficient manner priority is given to citizens with appointments. To avoid long waits, intake and pick-up appointments are highly recommended.

If you are reclaiming your lost pet, please make your appointment via 311 and arrive no later than 5:30pm (4:30pm on weekends) to allow enough time to process your pet's release before closing.

Search for Lost Pets

Every animal that enters our Animal Care & Control Centre is searched for tags, a tattoo or a microchip. When an animal has a valid pet licence and is wearing tags, we can immediately contact the owner. A tattoo or microchip with up-to-date information on file also helps us to contact the owner.

Animals with no identification are kept up to 3 business days and animals with identification are kept up to 10 business days.

After that, adoptable animals are transferred to the Edmonton Humane Society and other rescue groups.
