Updating the surface drainage in Kernohan Park to reduce the risk of flooding to both the park and surrounding buildings.

Project update - March 2025

Construction on the Kernohan Park Overland Drainage project is now complete and the project is now in the one-year maintenance period. The park is fully open for Edmontonians to use and enjoy.

Project Overview

Surface drainage in Kernohan Park, northeast Edmonton, needs to be updated to address the issue of cross-lot flooding. Currently, snowmelt and rainwater collects in a treed area, causing water to flood onto nearby properties. A new catch basin and underground stormline pipes will be installed near Ravine Estates condominium to catch snowmelt and rainwater and drain it away from the park. This work is expected to start in late May 2023 and is anticipated to take two months. Residents adjacent to the park will receive a letter outlining the work in the spring.

Tree Removals

A small stand of trees was removed to accommodate the work. After the underground storm lines are installed and surface regrading is complete, most of the trees will not be replaced. This is due to the new slopes being created to address the flooding, as well as the requirement to leave the area open to more sunshine, allowing water that may collect a chance to evaporate more quickly.
