Every Edmontonian marks their ‘X’ differently. Some voters require additional support.

Although anyone is eligible to apply for a special ballot, some voters may prefer to cast their ballot in person. There are many ways Edmonton Elections is ready to support Edmontonians who want to vote this way.

For more information, please see the accessibility plan.

Institutional Voting

During the week of advance voting (October 7-11, 2025), institutional voting stations will be available at multiple locations in Edmonton.

These voting opportunities are not open to the general public.
They are intended for populations that may otherwise be unable to attend a voting station.

More than 60 senior accommodation facilities and 4 hospitals are hosting institutional voting opportunities this election.

If you or a loved one is a resident or patient at one of these facilities reach out to staff or administration for information on specific dates and times of these voting opportunities.

Hospitals:

Patients from Edmonton’s main hospitals will be eligible to vote at their place of care. Ask hospital staff or administration for more details.

Technologies and Services

Multiple tools and technologies will be available at various voting opportunities.

Elector Assistance Terminals

Elector Assistance Terminals are equipped with multiple accessibility features to allow individuals to mark ballots privately and independently. Voters can review ballots using adjustable text, contrast settings or use audible playback of names.

There are also multiple ways to mark each ballot, including touchscreen, tactile buttons, rocker paddles and interface with a (user-supplied) sip-and-puff device.

Elector Assistance Terminals will be available at:

  • All advance voting locations
  • The city-wide (special ballot) voting station on Election Day (at the Edmonton Elections Office)

Hearing loops

A hearing loop sends sounds directly to a hearing aid or cochlear implants, making it easier to hear instructions without background noise.

Hearing loops will be available at:

  • All advance voting locations
  • The city-wide (special ballot) voting station on Election Day (at the Edmonton Elections Office)

Curbside

Curbside voting is also an option for anyone unable to enter a voting station, where ballots are brought to an accessible location (such as a vehicle).

Notify a member of the voting station team, who will facilitate the process with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all voting stations accessible?

All Advance Voting and Election Day voting stations have been assessed for their level of accessibility. Due to limited availability of suitable locations, some voting stations may not be entirely accessible. These locations are identified in the Where to Vote tool. Voters who are unable to access the voting station can inform the election worker positioned at the entrance to the facility.

If you have a specific accessibility request, please email accessibleelections@edmonton.ca, contact Edmonton Elections in advance of advance vote or Election Day.

I can’t stand for long periods of time. Can you accommodate me?

If a voter cannot stand for long periods of time, they can notify any election worker who will show the voter to a seating area. Chairs will be available to electors throughout the voting process.

Language and Tool Options

All voting stations will be equipped with basic translations and tools to assist individuals as they vote. Where possible and with advance notice, Edmonton Elections will provide additional accommodations.

Translations

Individuals have the option of bringing a translator or interpreter to the voting station. The interpreter, such as a friend or relative, will need to fill out a form at the voting station before performing the duties of interpreter. The interpreter will need to faithfully read or translate statements, questions and answers to the Deputy Returning Officer and keep secret any information that may come from the virtue of being an interpreter for a voter.

In some cases, election workers at a voting station may be able to help translate. By request, an ASL interpreter may also be arranged in advance. Please notify us 10 days in advance at accessibleelections@edmonton.ca or 780-422-VOTE (8683).

Translations of voting instructions will be available in all voting stations:
