Air Quality and Health in Edmonton

Curious about the air you breathe and how it affects your health? In this Change for Climate Lunchbox Series webinar, learn why air quality matters and how it's being impacted by climate change.

Alberta Capital Airshed will explore the health impacts of poor air quality and how it’s monitored across the region. The City of Edmonton’s Change for Climate team will also introduce practical tools - like the AQHI Light and portable monitors available at Edmonton Public Libraries - that can help you track local air quality and stay informed.

If you weren't able to celebrate Clean Air Day (Wednesday, June 4, 2025) with us, you can still learn how to build your own AQHI lamp and find out how to book our AirBeam air monitoring kit at Air Quality.

And save the date for the Alberta Capital Airshed's annual Clean Air Forum, to be hosted in Sherwood Park on November 4. The theme will be Clean Air, Thriving Communities: Exploring local air quality solutions.

Preparing for Extreme Weather

How prepared are you if you are instructed to evacuate, or to shelter in place? As the climate changes and weather events become more extreme and frequent, we are reminded to be prepared for any scenario. Learn about what to include in your emergency kits and why it’s important to connect with your neighbours before a situation arises.

Diverting Risk: Supporting Climate Resilience through Fire-Risk Modelling within the City of Edmonton

A CitiesIPCC Legacy Research Feature—This research project focused on 4 key cornerstones to help the City of Edmonton with evacuation responses and emergency preparedness decisions. The work included the development of a fire risk map and the identification of operational actions that municipalities can utilize.

Climate Change, Older Adults and Immigrants: Exploring Community Vulnerability and Resilience

A CitiesIPCCLegacy Research Feature—This research project explored community-level impacts of weather and air pollution in Edmonton, with a focus on older adult and immigrant populations. The research modelled relationships between air pollutants, weather parameters, socio-demographic characteristics, community characteristics and health outcomes to assess relationships. Older adult and immigrant communities and organizations that serve these populations, were engaged to explore in more depth, their concerns, knowledge, capacity and resiliency with respect to climate change and health issues.

Composting at Home

So now that you've been sorting your food scraps, consider giving home composting a try! Grass, leaves, plants and food scraps are valuable resources.

Home composting is fun and easy. It feeds our soil, supports biodiversity and reduces greenhouse gases. This session introduces basic principles, how to get started, maintaining and troubleshooting.

Clean Energy Improvement Program

By this time, the City will have launched the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) pilot to provide Edmontonians with access to low-cost financing to enable a minimum of 3 energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades to residential properties. Learn more about the program, the uptake and any lessons learned to date that might be applied to a full program.

Remote Work: Environmental, Social and Economic Opportunities and Risks

A CitiesIPCC Legacy Research Feature—This research project aimed to assess the positive and negative impacts of instituting work-from-home policies through an environmental, social, and economic lens to support the City of Edmonton’s Remote Work Program (RMW) and its climate commitments. Learnings from this research can also inform the community on how remote work programs designed to maximize the benefits, and weigh and mitigate the risks, can have the potential to contribute to reducing GHG emissions at a community level.

Climate Change 101

Climate change has become a defining issue of our time, and 73% of Edmontonians tell us they are concerned about it. This session will help demystify this complex topic, providing information about what climate change is, how climate change is impacting Edmonton, how the City of Edmonton is taking action and how Edmontonians can be part of the solution.

Home Energy Efficiency

Household energy use is a big deal. Most homes produce greenhouse gas emissions directly through natural gas-powered furnaces and water heaters and indirectly by consuming electricity. Within Edmonton, the residential sector produces almost 20% of our community greenhouse gas emissions every year. The choices you make in your home result in carbon emissions and affect your household contributions to climate change. This session describes opportunities for homeowners to improve their home's energy efficiency.

Front Yard Gardens

It’s possible to grow vegetables just about anywhere, as long as you have soil, sun and water. If your front or side yard or balcony is ideal for a garden, then you can convert that space to grow food for personal consumption or for sharing. The City not only approves, but encourages you to plant vegetables instead of turf, or Veg Instead! Just think of all the time you will save by not having to mow the lawn or not make a trip to the market. Growing your own food can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and improve your resilience, too.

Making the Switch: Solar Energy

This sunny session will enlighten you about the benefits of solar, a great place to start if you are thinking of taking advantage of the most abundant source of renewable energy. While electricity accounts for only 16% of the energy used in Edmonton, due to our carbon-intensive grid it produces around 40% of our community's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This session will address some of the most common misconceptions about solar energy in Edmonton, walk you through the benefits, help you understand how to navigate the process and what rebate programs are available.

Flood Prevention at Home

Flooding, hail, high winds and other extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense in Edmonton due to climate change. Climate modelling for Edmonton indicates that the likelihood of overland flooding caused by heavy rainfall events will increase in future. At this session, find out the flood risks for your neighbourhood, how to prepare, and programs available to support your flood-prevention efforts.

Change Mobility for Climate: Try Cycling

In Edmonton, transportation accounts for 30% of our greenhouse gas emissions and 42% of our energy use. We can change this by changing how we move, all while improving our air quality and health.

Find out the many ways you can move in Edmonton and if you are interested in riding your bike more often, but not sure how to get started, join us for a friendly introduction to cycling in Edmonton and how this active form of transportation can transform our city and lower our energy use.

Brush up on safety tips and resources available to help you feel more comfortable behind the handlebars. Learn how to use bike lanes for your commute, and Edmonton's trail system for leisurely rides. This is the perfect time to dust off and tune up your bicycle!

Waste Cart Rollout & Reducing GHG Emissions from Household Waste

Edmonton’s Cart Rollout is here, which means the way residents sort and set out their waste at home is changing! Learn about Edmonton’s waste system, including how the new way of sorting and collecting waste will contribute to making Edmonton climate resilient. Learn how to manage your waste responsibly with tips on sorting food scraps, information on the new collection services, and how home composting and going bagless are great ways to complement Edmonton’s Cart Rollout!
