WinterCity Strategy

We heard loud and clear from Edmontonians that it was time to reclaim the joy of winter and embrace the season.

It's time to be proud of our Edmonton winters, and even to be a little boastful about them!

We created a 10-year roadmap for working together as a community, for thinking differently, and creating a great winter city.

We've hit the 10-year mark and are truly proud to say that we are on our way to realizing all the great potential our winters have to offer.

Vision and Implementation

Imagine Edmonton being world-renowned for celebrating our northern climate. A city where people like coming out to public spaces even in the darkest, cold days of winter. A city where streets and buildings are designed with our climate in mind, where light is used to create warmth and luminescence during long winter days, and a place where snow is considered a valuable resource.

This is what Edmonton’s WinterCity Strategy is all about: creating a city that's inviting, vibrant and exciting for residents and tourists, throughout the winter months.

Winter Design

The Winter Design Guidelines (9.1 MB) provides a robust winter lens that can be applied to future development decisions throughout Edmonton. The Winter Design Policy calls for the City of Edmonton to support the following 5 winter design principles:

Incorporate design strategies to block wind

Maximize exposure to sunshine through orientation and design

Use colour to enliven the cityscape

Create visual interest with strategic use of creative lighting

Provide infrastructure that supports the desired winter life

These principles can be applied to all contexts such as neighbourhoods, streets, sites and open spaces in different ways. The Winter Design Guidelines provide flexible guidance and inspiration.
