Apply for the Civic Youth Fellowship
The Civic Youth Fellowship began in spring 2023 as a pilot and is officially recognized by Council as a permanent program.
The Fellowship provides equity-deserving youth from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to apply for an internship with the City. This internship occurs over several weeks between the spring and summer months. During this time, they have the opportunity to:
This program is in direct response to the City’s Anti-racism Strategy, Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Municipal Response Plan and Anti-Black Racism Action Plan, where recommendations called for the City to have stronger connections to equity-deserving communities - specifically youth - and provide opportunities for engagement in and learning about municipal government.
Each winter, the City will promote the opportunity through our community partners, the City’s social channels and through our contacts at various post secondary institutions across the city.
Candidates must be between the ages of 19-30. Post-secondary education is a strong asset.
The typical format of the internship includes 4 training sessions with community partners, as well as opportunities to network with community leaders and learn valuable skills for working in the public sector.
Short-listed candidates are required to create pitch videos and speed network with the participating offices (City Council members and City Executives) to determine the best fits for the various placements. Once the matches have been made, the youth join the City of Edmonton teams. The length of the internship may range from 8-10 weeks.
Since the completion of the 2023 program, 6 of the 13 interns have secured part-time or full-time employment, including 4 within Council Offices, Administration or another government policy office.
This internship is powered by the support of the following community partners:
The Africa Centre, is the largest pan African organisation in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community.

Here at ASSIST we are committed to serving the community at large by providing programs and services that meet a variety of needs for newcomers. We welcome all people to our programs regardless of race, gender identity, ability, religion, and sexual orientation, and strive to create an inclusive, diverse, and respectful environment for everyone.
The Canadian Race Relations Foundation was created in 1996 to reaffirm the principles of justice and equality for all in Canada. The mandate of the Foundation is to facilitate throughout Canada the development, sharing, and application of knowledge and expertise to contribute to the elimination of racism and all forms of racial discrimination in Canadian society.
