The Muttart Conservatory features more than 700 species of plants in 3 climate-regulated biomes - arid, temperate and tropical - and a feature biome, located within our pyramids.
Explore the Arid, Temperate, Tropical pyramids. In the feature pyramid, you can enjoy unique themed displays and seasonal celebrations.
Tropical Pyramid
Enter this pyramid and you will find a rainforest full of surprises from the ground up.
In this biome, species compete for light and make use of all available space to grow. The plants in this diverse forest enjoy habitats of rich soils, deep moss, bark and branch, stream and pond, rock and crevice, and even the cement walls!
Relax by the waterfall. Share secrets on a hidden pathway. Watch sunlight flicker upon the leaves. Listen to the forest breathe.
Get lost in the jungle looking at the diversity that thrives deep in the understory, and that which reaches for the sky. There are more than 60 plant families represented with over 350 different species waiting to captivate your imagination. Come find out why guests from warmer regions around the world find themselves at home, in Edmonton, in our very own Tropical Pyramid.
Arid Pyramid
The Arid Pyramid is home to some really tough plants – the kind that thrive in dry, desert-like conditions with less than 25cm of rain a year.
Imagine cacti, succulents, and those strange plants with big swollen stems. This pyramid is huge, at 4,200 square feet and 59 feet high. During winter, it's kept at a cool 12 degrees Celsius, and the plants are barely watered to copy their natural resting state. But when spring rolls around, things heat up, watering increases, and the plants start growing again.
Summer temperatures can soar above 30 degrees Celsius, which causes most of the arid plants to bloom – just like they would in their natural homes. Many of the larger plants in the pyramid have been thriving for years!
This place is more than just a greenhouse; it's like a living museum that's all about saving different kinds of plants and teaching the public about the amazing world of plants and how they've adapted to survive in harsh and super dry environments.
Temperate Pyramid
This pyramid is a world tour of plants from all sorts of places around the globe– think grasslands, savannas, shrublands, and forests galore!
These places have different temperatures depending on the season. When it gets cold in the fall and winter, some plants go dormant until the next season when they get ready to bloom again.
In spring, the pyramid comes alive! Magnolias start blooming in late February and pink redbuds add colour to bare tree branches. In April, you'll see bell-shaped rhododendron flowers and the Golden Chain Tree's cascading yellow blooms. When autumn comes around, the temperature and light decrease, and the leaves change colour, creating a beautiful fall display.
Starting January 11, get transported to another planet with Luke Jerram’s Mars. Jerram's previous installations, Gaia and Museum of the Moon awed guests and filled them with wonder.
Measuring 7 metres in diameter and glowing, Luke Jerram’s Mars features detailed NASA imagery of the Martian surface. Suspended from the apex of the Feature Pyramid, Mars will be surrounded by bright red plants including Bromeliads, Begonias and other bizarre botanicals that are out of this world. Soft seating throughout the pyramid will allow for an immersive experience, which can be enjoyed during the day or night.
We look forward to sharing the mystery of space with you!
