Entertainment Districts allow for spaces throughout the city where food and drink (including alcoholic beverages) can be consumed on the street.
The City of Edmonton is focused on creating vibrancy and giving Edmontonians and visitors opportunities to have fun and enjoy local events throughout the year.
Reducing red tape can help transform our neighbourhoods into year-round destinations with an abundance of cultural vibrancy and expanded economic activity.

What is an Entertainment District?
The Government of Alberta has enacted legislation that allows municipalities to create a bylaw called an “Entertainment District,” with defined boundaries.
The Entertainment District designation allows patrons to take their beverage (including alcohol) from a licensed establishment out into the defined district.
Food and Beverages
All beverages must be purchased from participating businesses and served in an approved to-go cup.
Beverages can be consumed anywhere within the district boundaries, but they must be disposed of before exiting.
Within the district, you may not consume alcohol purchased or obtained outside the district. However, you are welcome to bring your own food or non-alcoholic beverages.
Activation
Any Entertainment District must be activated for events with the permission of the City of Edmonton and will generally take place during special events when the roadway is closed to traffic.
The establishment of an Entertainment District allows these events to take place without any additional alcohol permits or fenced liquor consumption areas.
