Universiade '83 Foundation

Approximately every 4 years, the Universiade ’83 Foundation Grant provides one-time funding to Edmonton-based not-for-profit organizations or public institutions for a project or program that promotes sport or the arts in Edmonton.

Available funds are generated from a trust account established following Edmonton’s hosting of the 1983 World University Games (Universiade). The total budget that was available in 2023 was approximately $60,000.

Grant Priorities

Priority is given to projects that:

Promote awareness of and/or involvement in sport or the arts in Edmonton
Enhance an existing art or sports program
Develop leadership in the area of sport or the arts
Promote partnerships and/or collaborations
Provide training for coaches, instructors, artists or performers
Create a long-term benefit to the creative or financial growth of an organization or institution

Grant Funding Allocation and Requirements

Grants are based on 50% of eligible program expenses to a maximum grant of $5,000 (Applicants must be able to match the grant amount requested with either in-kind or financial contribution. The value of the in-kind contribution is $20/hour for general volunteer support and $40/hour for professional/specialized)
Projects already receiving City funding are not eligible
Projects must be completed within 1 year of receiving the grant

Eligibility

Applicant must:

Be a public institution or a not-for-profit organization registered for at least 1 year
Have a primary mandate of sport or the arts
Have no outstanding reports or debts owed to the City of Edmonton

Ineligible Expenses

Program funding cannot be used for expenses related to:

Facility construction or maintenance
Administration expenses not associated with the project/program
Travel fares or allowances
Costs of projects started before the grant is awarded

Grant Assessment

The review of applications is done by staff from the Edmonton Sport Council, Edmonton Arts Council and a City of Edmonton Community Grant Coordinator.

Grant recommendations will be made to the Community Services Advisory Board who will then make recommendations to the Director of Community Resources.

Assessment Criteria

The following criteria will be considered in the review and assessment of applications:

Grant priorities
Project scope (how many people will benefit)
Overall merit (benefits and positive impacts for Edmontonians)
Ability of the organization to deliver the project or program

Reporting Requirements

A final report is required for projects that receive funding within 60 days of project completion.
