Phase 1 of the Edmonton Edge Fund supports businesses in their efforts to start, scale and grow in Edmonton.

Program Overview

The City of Edmonton has allocated $5 million to the administration of Phase 1 of the Edmonton Edge Fund. Phase 1 of the program is designed to address a current gap in funding available to innovators and entrepreneurs operating in or entering the Edmonton market. Funding will be offered in the form of project-based grants through the following 2 streams:

The City of Edmonton is pleased to announce the funding award recipients for Phase 1 of the Edmonton Edge Fund. We’ve invested $5 million to support innovative projects that demonstrate the potential to transform and grow the local economy.

Start Stream - $991,800

Canchuks Corrosion Inc. - $91,800
- Validating the company’s non-contact, magnetic gradient corrosion assessment technologies, which stands to increase operational efficiencies and increased capabilities in the integrity testing of below-ground pipelines.
Dark Matter Materials Inc. - $100,000
- Prototyping and testing the company’s proprietary catalytic hydrogen generator, which stands to achieve on-site and on-demand hydrogen generation without the need for an energy source.
International Renewable Energy Systems Inc. - $100,000
- Prototyping and commercializing the company’s vertical-axis wind turbine, which is designed for small-scale (residential) energy generation applications.
Millennium Three Technologies Inc. - $100,000
- Prototyping and testing of a computer-vision-powered prefabrication module assembly system, which stands to increase the precision and efficiency of industrial processes.
NGT Energy - $100,000
- Developing and testing a non-radioactive, multi-phase flow meter prototype that the company intends to commercialize in North and South American markets.
OligomicsTx Inc. - $100,000
- Researching, developing and testing of the company’s drug delivery technology in the treatment of a rare muscle-wasting condition known as facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD).
Optimal Combustion Consulting Services Ltd. - $100,000
- Prototyping of the company’s self-sustaining mobile utility system, which will use renewable energy to provide all aspects of human comfort (such as heat, power, hot water and waste management), in industrial remote work sites.
Swift Charge - $100,000
- Manufacturing and field-testing of the company’s electric vehicle (EV) fast-charger commercial prototype, which can be installed and operated without the need for upgrades to the existing grid infrastructure.
UpRow - $100,000
- Integrating artificial intelligence technologies into the company’s current platform, which will enable newcomers to access personalized services provided by local businesses at discounted rates.
ZerOne Hockeyology - $100,000
- Upgrading the company’s digital infrastructure, and collaborating with a University of Alberta research lab to enhance the company’s data-driven hockey player performance analysis services.

Scale & Grow Stream - $3,758,200

48Hour Discovery - $530,000
- Scaling of the company’s early drug discovery service, which will be achieved through the validation of its radiopharmaceutical assets, and also through enhancements to its operational capacity and laboratory spaces.
DiveThru - $750,000
- Constructing and opening 2 additional brick-and-mortar locations in Edmonton, allowing the company to scale the provision of end-to-end mental health services.
Future Fields - $550,000
- Designing, constructing and operating a 6,000 square foot insect rearing and biomanufacturing facility, which will enable the company to scale up its production of recombinant proteins used for commercial applications in various emerging industries.
Kind Ice Cream - $289,609
- Opening and operating a new commercial facility, which will allow for a three-fold increase in the company’s production of ice cream base. A spin-off company will be created to explore business-to-business sales opportunities, and the increased production will be capitalized on through the opening of 2 new modular locations.
MuslimKids.TV - $334,000
- Creating an in-house video game development studio to complement the company’s streaming service and capitalize on the early success it observed in producing gaming products based on its original content.
Technology North Corporation - $581,570
- Scaling of the company’s digital services program through research and development, program development, marketing, and the opening of a new physical location. This scaling effort stands to create employment opportunities for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Zero Point Cryogenics - $723,020
- Scaling of the company’s production of dilution refrigerators, used in quantum computing applications, which will be achieved through capital equipment investments to increase operational outputs, and marketing and sales activities to enable large-scale commercialization.

Program Streams

Phase 1 of the Edmonton Edge Fund will offer grant funding through 2 streams:

The Start Stream funds projects that support businesses in their efforts to advance the development of their innovations and begin commercializing them
The Scale & Grow Stream funds large-scale projects that support the scale-up and growth efforts of businesses while, in turn, producing significant economic outcomes

Program Outcomes

Projects must support the advancement of one or more of the following outcomes.

Job Creation

Creates jobs in Edmonton that support the completion of the project and/or the long-term operations of the business.

Down/Upstream Benefits

The project generates outcomes that benefit other businesses within the local economy, including the local supply chain.

Economic Benefits

Generates economic outcomes that support the local economy, including increases in capital expenditure, investment attraction, intellectual property development and property tax revenue.

Social Benefits

The project generates outcomes that benefit Edmontonians and/or the environment.
