An Edmonton Fire Rescue crew working to extinguish a wildfire

A long-term wildfire risk strategy would prioritize reducing the potential of physical and economic losses from wildfires, protecting people, property and the environment.

“Fires in the Wildland-Urban Interface are now one of the leading causes of natural disaster losses in Canada, and the impact that they are having on communities is increasing.”

-FireSmart BC

The City of Edmonton is creating a plan to manage risks of wildfire in areas where urban developments meet undeveloped vegetation areas - the wildland-urban interface. The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Wildfire Risk Strategy will address the increasing threat of wildfires in urban areas due to climate change and expanding urban development.

A long-term strategy would prioritize reducing the potential of physical and economic losses from wildfires, protecting people, property and the environment.

Upcoming Public Engagement

Engagement for the WUI Wildfire Risk Strategy will occur in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Engagement on Development of Draft Strategy (summer 2025) - We will gather public perception of wildfire risk, awareness of wildfire preparedness and preferences for mitigation activities.
  • Phase 2: Engagement on Draft Strategy or Draft Approach (late 2025) - We will gather targeted feedback on the draft strategy to help refine it and show how public input was used.

Opportunities for engagement will include online surveys, pop-up events, and workshops. Specific dates and locations for these opportunities will be shared when they are confirmed.
