There are a number of ways to get involved. City Council encourages your participation and knows the value of a healthy dialogue between the municipal government and its citizens.
You can phone your Councillor, write a letter or meet with a Member of Council.
Public hearings and community meetings allow Council to canvas a wide segment of the community. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Council and Committees post all meeting information online. Check the meeting details and review the agenda before arriving.
Requests to speak must be in reference to a specific item on a Council or Committee meeting agenda.

Agendas for Council and Committee meetings are typically published on Thursdays, 10 days before the week of the meeting, with the exception of Statutory City Council Public Hearing agendas, which are published on the Thursday two and a half weeks before the meeting.
The person will need to complete an Authorization to Speak on Someone's Behalf form and you will need to bring the original, signed form to the meeting.
Changes to security procedures are part of a regular security assessment and are intended to make our safe City facilities even safer.
We encourage visitors to arrive 5-10 minutes earlier to accommodate these procedures.
Screening Officers on duty at the public entrance to Council Chambers and the River Valley Room will also be able to answer your questions.
Visitors will be screened for possession of prohibited metal items.
The City of Edmonton reserves the right to alter its screening procedure at any time to ensure the safety of Council and citizens.

The Clerk will call out the bylaws to be dealt with. The Mayor will call out the names of the people registered to speak to each bylaw.
Next, Council members will select the bylaws that they wish to discuss, and vote on any bylaws that have not been selected for discussion.
Council will then deal with each of the bylaws that were selected for discussion and debate.
For each item, Administration will first provide an overview of the bylaw. Members of the public who have registered to speak will then be invited to make their presentations. Those in favour will speak first in panels, followed by those opposed, in panels. Each person will have five minutes to make comments. The Clerk will run the official timer in Council Chamber. The timer lights on the podiums will be green for the first four minutes, turn yellow when there is one minute remaining, and flash red when the five minutes are up. If you are participating virtually, you may wish to use a timer of your own. When you have finished your presentation, please remain available as Council may have questions for you.
After comments from the public, Council may ask questions of City Administration. After all questions of Administration have concluded, The Mayor will ask Council if they wish to ask any further questions of those who presented in response to new information that may have arisen during the public hearing. Thereafter, Council may close the public hearing and debate the bylaw.

Ensure that your letter is effective:
Council correspondence is distributed electronically to all members of City Council as either citizen feedback or meeting correspondence if the correspondence relates to an item on a released meeting agenda. Correspondence related to Public Hearing agenda items is made publicly available with personal information redacted
Depending on the complexity of the issue, your question or concern will be dealt with either by a Councillor, an appropriate department or office, or a Standing Committee of City Council. You may receive an answer by phone or mail. In the case of a Standing Committee report, you will be advised of the meeting at which the report will be considered. You may request an opportunity to speak to the committee at that time.
Allow several weeks for a response.
Please note: Information contained in letters to City Council may be made available to the public.
Petitions are used to express public opinion to City Council. A petition is a written request signed by electors (eligible voters) of the City of Edmonton, which is presented to City Council.
Petitions that meet all legislative requirements defined in the Municipal Government Act (MGA) can be used to request City Council take action on a specific issue.
If a petition is deemed to not to have met the legislative requirements, it then becomes Council correspondence. This includes petitions where signatures were collected online, where signatures were not witnessed, or where not enough signatures were gathered to meet legislated thresholds.
